The rise of the Green Vote
The Greens have received the biggest vote for a third party since the Second World War. "We have achieved balance of power in the Senate and will use that power responsibly for good and progressive outcomes for the people of Australia" Australian Greens Deputy Leader Christine Milne said today.
While election has still not been decided it is clear that the Green vote in Australia is on the rise.
Greens leader Bob Brown said that ''The reality is the Greens have established ourselves as the third political entity in this country, the one where the excitement is and the innovation is.'' The first Greens member elected to the House of Representatives in Melbourne is a huge milestone.
Christine Milne says that "regardless of which party forms government, we will work with them using the huge experience we have with balance of power politics. We will also work with the Independents in the House of Representatives to progress important initiatives for Australia including a national gross feed in tariff and stronger biosecurity and quarantine regimes."
